Full Moon Photography
Winter is now gone, and the summer days are hot and humid. However, the cooler night air is beautiful, and makes a great change to the hotter days. Perfect for being out and enjoying some half moon and also full moon photography. It’s time to look to the stars!
On the night of the full moon I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for another nice clear, cloud-free night. That way we should be able to shoot some cracking, sharp, well-exposed images of the glorious full moon.
The skies have been amazing the past few weeks, and I’ll be closely checking my astro calendars to make sure the best nights are scheduled for Astro Photography.

Even though Magnetic Island is close to Townsville, it is in a fairly good location for low light-pollution.
The far end of Horseshoe Bay is nicely ‘shaded’ by Mt Cook and one of my favourite locations to set up for star-trails, Milky Way or moon shots.
For this shoot, under the light of the full moon, it’ll be especially bright. Less ideal for shooting the Milky Way or star-trails, but perfect for “shootin’ for the moon!” That’s what we are out for though, right? I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for a typical gorgeous clear winter night sky. Ideally, no clouds!
A week or so later, I’ll be watching for the Waning Gibbous Moon… a near-half moon. There’s something mysterious about not seeing all of it, and I kinda like the shots I have take of the half-moon maybe a bit more than the full moon.
Be sure to pencil in the dates, and let’s see what we can shoot!

- Some back-up camera equipment on a first-come first-served basis.
- Patient and clear guidance on how to get the most out of your photography gear, and the more specialised techniques involved to shoot the moon.
Please come prepared for a fun evening out. Make sure that you can carry anything you need for the duration. Dress warmly and with layers, and bring a small headlamp or flashlight. One with a red LED is great! The following is not included:
- Travel insurance and other emergency coverage.
- Food and refreshments.
- Photography equipment beyond basic gear listed above.
