Magnetic Island is an excellent location for wildlife photography. Quietly observing, appreciating and taking some (hopefully fantastic) images. This is what Eastern Osprey photography is all about.
Osprey’s often return to the same nest year after year, and there are a number of long-term nests on Magnetic Island. Hopefully we may get to see some young Ospreys.
If you’re really lucky, you’ll also see the magnificent Eastern Ospreys out hunting.
We also offer Koala photography sessions as the little fur-balls are a firm family favourite.
Currently there are no specific dates set, as I have found most people contact me to request their own class. So please feel free to email me, or call/sms/WhatsApp on 0436 289 402 to discuss your bespoke class.

As with everything wild nothing is guaranteed from a photographic point of view. However, the plan is to visit the far end of HSB where they have a large nest. We will see what we can see!
There are also nests in Alma Bay and near Cockle Bay. Horseshoe Bay does offer the easiest access and more vantage points.
The Ospreys are often seen on the wing. Also sat on a high perch, observing. With some patience and a little luck, we may see them making a catch.
Shooting them flying with it is also an amazing shot when achieved. Easier, but still amazing is seeing them enjoying the meal in one of the trees nearby the nest.
I will have a few cameras with long lenses with me. One small hand-holdable Nikon 1 V3 with a 70-300mm (180-810mm equivalent; a hikers dream!) as well as the large 400mm f2.8VR lens, and even larger 600mm f4 lens, mounted to pro-grade bodies. Both will be set up on tripods with gimbal heads.
And of course, bring whatever gear you have. We can see what can get! (Of course, a GoPro or an iPhone is probably not ideal for this though!)
The following will be included:
- A fun, friendly photo session in a casual yet professional environment.
- Some basic back-up camera equipment on a first-come first-served basis, in addition to the large gear that can be tried out.
- A fully guided tour of the best spots for wildlife photography.
- Patient and clear guidance on how to get the most out of your photography gear.
Please come prepared for an exciting morning out. Make sure that you can carry anything you need for the duration. The following is not included:
- Travel insurance and other emergency coverage.
- Food and refreshments.
- Specialised photography equipment beyond what is listed above.
